From the left-side menu, select Recovery. Scroll down to the Advanced Start section in the right pane, and press Restart now button.
Now click Troubleshoot > Advanced > UEFI Firmware Settings. Select the Restart.

This process is somewhat advanced and may cause harm to your Type Cover, so if you're not satisfied with this process and don't understand exactly what you're doing, it's probably best to avoid this solution.
If Surface Pro 4 Type Cover does not work, there's the possibility of the connector being faulty. Some users reported that their Type Cover has a plastic bump. According to them, firmly pressuring the plastic bump behind the connector solved the problem.
This may sound a bit complex, and we strongly recommend you skip this solution if you don't understand how to do it.
3. Reinstall the keyboard drivers
If Surface Pro 4 Type Cover doesn't work, the issue may be related to the keyboard drivers, according to users. Your drivers may not be the latest or the fastest, and this can cause problems.
To fix the issue, you are advised to reinstall the drivers on your keyboard. This is very easy to do and you can do so by following these steps:
Right-click on the Start button, from the list pick Device Manager.
Find the keyboard driver and right-click on it. Select device Uninstall from the menu.
Click Uninstall once the confirmation screen comes up.
For all keyboard tools, repeat the preceding two steps.
When all the keyboard drivers are uninstalled, press the icon Scan for hardware changes.
Windows will now search for and install missing drivers. Your Surface Pro 4 Type Cover will then start working again after doing that.
Maybe you can keep your drivers updated if you want to stop driver problems in the future. There are many methods to do that, but the easiest way is to use software like TweakBit Driver Updater.
If you are not sure what drivers you should probably avoid directly downloading and installing them. So it's better to use this tool.
4. Disconnect and remove the Type Cover throughout the night
If your Surface Pro 4 Type Cover doesn't work, according to users, this workaround can allow you to temporarily fix this issue. To fix the problem, some users disconnect the Type Cover from the Surface and leaving it throughout the night without a power connection.
The same applies to Surface Pro, and leave this overnight without power. The Type Cover will start working again without complications once you connect the two in the morning. Keep in mind that it is just a quick solution, so it's highly probable the issue will come up again.
5. Download firmware and uninstall troublesome drivers
If Surface Pro 4 Type Cover isn't working, the issue could be your firmware or drivers. Installing the firmware for the Windows 10 version you are using to fix the issue.
After you have installed the firmware, removing other devices from the System Manager is recommended. To do so, perform the following steps:
Start Device Manager.
Locate and extend the firmware. Now you will have to uninstall some devices. For this option, be sure to pick Delete driver software in the dialogue box for each device. The devices you'll have to uninstall are:
Surface Embedded Controller Firmware
Surface System Aggregator
Surface UEFI
After these drivers are disabled, restart the Surface Pro.
After restarting your device, check to see if the fault is still there. You can try installing the new drivers for the three devices you've disabled, so you can do that too. The issue must be resolved when the drivers are updated.
