While Surface 4 tablets, like any other system, are fantastic little devices, they might come across some problems. A common issue continuing to emerge is trouble when Microsoft's Type Cover stopped being recognized by the Surface Pro 4. The reason might be one of the latest updates. Try connecting it to another Surface to see if it's working. If it is lightening up and working fine then you need to follow these troubleshooting steps or you should need to repair your Surface Pro 4.
1. Disconnect and Reconnect the Type cover
Unplug the Surface and Remove the Type cover.
Take a cotton swab and wet it with rubbing alcohol. It is recommended to use 95% or stronger Isopropyl Alcohol. Rub the cotton swab on the 6 circular magnets on the Type cover connector slowly back and forth. When done, ensure the pins are dry and the connector are properly clean with no cotton fibres left over. After this, clean the Surface connector.
Reconnect the Type cover and ensure that all the magnets are properly touching the bottom edge of the Surface.
2. Surface Pro 4 Type Cover driver reinstallation
Type device manager in the taskbar search fiel, and pick Device Manager in results.
Expand your keyboard.
Click Uninstall > OK.
Right-click Surface Pro 4 Type Cover Filter Device.
Reboot the Surface Pro 4. Whenever you connect to the internet next time, it will automatically download and install the Surface Type Cover driver.
3. Force Shut down and reboot
Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds on your Surface, then release it.
Press and hold down the volume-up key and the power button for at least 15 seconds together, and then release all.
The Surface logo may appear on the screen, but keep holding down the buttons for a minimum of 15 seconds.
Wait for at least 10 seconds after you release the keys.
Press the power button and release it to turn on the Surface again. You should take a look at the Surface logo.
4. Run a Diagnostic on Surface
Run DiagnosticToolkit on Surface. This is a self-healing tool that searches for possible problems and fixes them. It also ensures that your device is fully up-to-date.
To execute the Diagnostic Toolkit on Surface:
Prepare your devices and collect information.
Ensure the internet is accessible to your Surface. If you have issues with Wi-Fi, go to Surface and you can not locate my wireless network.
Save all the files and close all the open programs and applications.
Plugin and keep your Surface connected to power during this process.
Find out which Windows version and OS you are using?
Ensure that you know your serial code. Go to Find the serial number on the Surface.
Download the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit
Select Run, and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
5. Update the Firmware and Drivers
To ensure the latest drivers and firmware are available, please go to Download Surface Drivers and Firmware and download the .msi file.
If there is no .msi file that matches the Windows 10 build you've activated, pick the .msi file nearest to your build number.
Then choose Start > Settings > System > About to figure out which version and build of Windows you are using, then look under Windows Specifications to find the version of the operating system and OS build number.
To apply the modifications reboot the Surface Twice.
If the above methods don't work, we strongly recommend that you roll back the previous design.
